Data Doesn’t Lie

by | 23 Oct 2024 | Business Tips

“My clients won’t pay that.”
“No one is spending at the moment.”
“I don’t think they are going to renew this year.”
“Things will fall apart if I give this to someone else to do.”
“I’ll never get this done before the end of the year.”

I often hear these statements from the women I work with (and sometimes catch myself saying them too if I’m being completely honest)

They’re stories we tell ourselves—stories that keep us from seeing our business reality clearly and taking the actions that matter most for our growth and our clients.

When things feel uncertain, it’s easy to think that everything is falling apart. Our feelings can lead us down a path of hopelessness. But feelings aren’t facts.

What gives you the reality check you need?

Data.

You’ve probably heard the saying, “the data doesn’t lie.” But how often are you actually checking the data before declaring all is doomed?

Without clear metrics, it’s easy to let these stories take over and lose sight of what’s really happening in your business.

Was it truly a bad quarter, or was it just a challenging week?

Is this launch really a disaster, or have sign-ups just stalled today?

Identifying and Tracking Your Key Metrics

The key to making data-driven decisions is knowing which metrics matter most to your business and your specific goals.

It could be your weekly revenue, your client retention rate, or the number of leads you generate from a particular campaign. Whatever they are for your business, you need to define the metrics that matter, and regularly monitor them. Whether it’s daily or weekly, make it a non-negotiable practice.

For me, I review my key metrics every Friday as part of my weekly wrap-up. This habit allows me to enter the new week with a clear head, focused on real numbers and not driven by gut feelings. It also gives me the opportunity to adjust my strategy when necessary, based on facts instead of assumptions.

Make the Shift: Move from Storytelling to Strategic Action

If you find yourself stuck in stories, it’s time to shift gears. Start using the information you have to back yourself and take action.

If you need support in making this shift, working with a strategist and accountability partner could be just what you need. Together, we can identify your metrics that matter, build practices to monitor them consistently, and keep you on track to meet your goals.
